Every year, our local restaurants serve thousands of oysters and clams to eager customers. But what happens to the leftover shells after the shellfish have been consumed? Through the Shell Recycling Program, the discarded shells are collected and are repurposed for environmental restoration rather than ending up in landfills.
Here’s what makes this program extraordinary: The collected shells become the foundation for enhancing oyster reefs along New Jersey’s coastline, with a special focus on the Mullica River. These waters are home to one of the Atlantic coast’s last self-sustaining oyster reefs – a remarkably resilient community that has weathered freshwater flooding events, disease outbreaks, and climate change impacts.
