We are excited to share a valuable opportunity that can benefit both our local businesses and job seekers. The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development offers an On-the-Job Training (OJT) program that’s designed to help employers develop the skilled workforce they need while providing job seekers with paid training opportunities.

Here’s why the OJT program is worth considering for your business:

  1. Financial Support: The program offers wage reimbursement of up to 50% of your new employees’ gross wages for the first six months, with a potential subsidy of up to $10,000 per employee.
  2. Tailored Training: You can design a training plan that bridges specific skill gaps, ensuring your new employees learn exactly what they need to excel in their roles.
  3. Expanded Talent Pool: The program encourages hiring individuals who may need additional training, potentially expanding your pool of qualified candidates.
  4. Support Throughout the Process: Experienced OJT contract writers will assist you in selecting qualified candidates and navigating the application process.

To participate in the program, employers must meet certain criteria, including:

  • Approval of contracts before the new hire starts
  • Hiring New Jersey residents (not rehires or relatives)
  • Offering permanent, full-time positions (at least 32 hours per week)
  • Paying at least $1 over the state minimum wage
  • Having an open job lead posted with NJDOL
  • Developing an approved training plan that goes beyond traditional onboarding

For job seekers, the OJT program offers:

  • The opportunity to earn a paycheck while learning new skills
  • Training tailored to bridge specific skill gaps
  • A competitive advantage in the job market
  • The potential for long-term employment after the training period

The OJT program can last anywhere from 4 to 26 weeks, depending on the complexity of the skills being taught. It’s an excellent way to invest in your workforce while receiving financial support to do so.
